The Curry Club Celebrates Grand Opening

New restaurant on Waxpool brings authentic Indian cuisine to Ashburn

The Curry Club Indian Restaurant, Bar & Lounge of Ashburn celebrated its grand opening Wednesday, complete with a DJ, hors d’oeuvres, raffles and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. In attendance were County Chairman Scott K. York and Supervisor Stevens Miller (Dulles), representatives from the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club President John Warren, restaurant owner Madan Mohan and his wife Shalini Sharma and many guests.

The Curry Club had a soft opening in December 2010 and has since earned a loyal lunch following. Wednesday’s Grand Opening event was an opportunity for the restaurant to introduce its cuisine and ambiance to the Ashburn community.

Mohan, while no stranger to the restaurant industry, is trying his hand as a restaurateur in this country for the first time. He opened and operated two restaurants in New Zealand years ago and has been working in the food industry for 25 years.

Sharma, Mohan’s wife, said that their motto is to “let us change your perception of Indian food.” To do so, they keep their menus updated with new, seasonal dishes and serve traditional Mughul cuisine that represents the flavor of Northern Indian recipes. They use whole Mathania chilies, ghee, black cardamom and Kashmiri chili: spices that are not used in Indian fusion cooking.

The Curry Club’s General Manager Shyam Sunder Sharma described Executive Chef Diwan Singh as an “authentic Indian cuisine chef.”

“Chef Singh worked for Indian ambassadors and after they retired, he stayed on in the country,” Sharma said.

Something unique that The Curry Club offers is a window into the kitchen, so that diners can watch the chefs prepare their dishes. The ambiance of the restaurant welcomes quiet dining as well as families and large groups. The bar features Indian ale as well as traditional beer, wine and spirits.

A seven-day lunch buffet, dinner menus, a kids menu and onsite and on-location catering are all available from the restaurant.

Mohan, an Ashburn resident, aims to make his restaurant community-friendly and showed his community spirit at the grand opening by conducting a raffle to benefit Ryan Diviney, and by donating the cost of a ticket to the Rotary Club’s fundraising gala for the Diviney family. The restaurant also gave away several gift certificates as door prizes to guests in attendance.

Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce Director of Sales and Marketing, Lauri Swift, closed out the evening with a welcome to the owners: “The Chamber welcomes you as a thriving member of the business community.”
