Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Wins 2nd Place in 'Best of US'

AFVRD took home $1,000 in the Johnsonville contest highlighting the best volunteer fire departments in the nation.

Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department (AVFRD) won second place in Johnsonville's Sausage second annual 'Best of US' contest, which honors the nation's "unsung heroes" who exemplify volunteerism and community service.

"This department is unique because its focus is community risk reduction. AVFRD responds when called, but prevention through education is its primary focus," the contest website reads. "What makes AVFRD different is that its members reach out to everyone, in as many ways as possible, to reduce risk in the community. And when education fails, they respond."

AVFRD hosts birthday tours for small children that include safety messages, drills second- and third-grade students on exit drills and "stop, drop and roll" procedures, and briefs teenagers on driving safely during prom season. The department frequently visits private residents upon request for inspections as well as retirement communities to teach kitchen safety.

AVFRD also holds spring and fall open houses each year to educate the public on dialing 911, finger printing, blood pressure checks, fire extinguisher operation, electrical safety and home fire prevention.

The department was one of nine finalists to win $1,000 in funding for its firehouse or community. Vienna Volunteer Fire Department in Georgia took home the grand prize of $10,000 and smoke alarm equipment for 100 homes.

Established in 1944, Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department currently has approx. 200 active members.
